Behind the Brass Plate

Chapter 09 - Behind the Brass Plate

A forensic technician examined the frame in court.

The brass nameplate responded to pressure on two points shaped like aircraft wings. A hidden panel opened beneath the velvet backing.

Inside was a shielded memory module.

The erasure order that destroyed Leah’s local recorder had never reached it.

The module contained Sentinel’s raw decision logs, Connor’s audio and a short video recorded from the cockpit.

Adrian appeared on a remote-support screen before the mission.

Connor confronted him about missing certification failures.

Adrian told him to complete the evacuation and discuss concerns afterward.

Connor said he had already copied the files.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Do you understand what happens if you destroy confidence in the system during an active conflict?”

“Confidence is already false.”

The call ended.

Minutes later, Hale-Seven altered the route.

The sequence demonstrated premeditation more clearly than any witness could.

Margaret watched her two sons on the screen—one warning, one calculating.

She began crying silently.

Leah had imagined this moment for three years. She expected vindication to feel like release.

Instead, she saw an aunt learning that grief had been used as camouflage by her surviving child.

Truth could clear one person and devastate another simultaneously.

The technician copied the data under court supervision.

The original module entered federal custody.

Margaret requested the medals remain with Connor’s estate after the investigation.

Leah agreed immediately.

“I never wanted them.”

Margaret looked at her.

“I know that now.”

The apology had not yet been spoken.

Recognition came first.
