The Funeral Video

Chapter 10 - The Funeral Video
Arthur’s funeral had been closed-casket.
Gideon believed it was because the stroke caused visible damage. Helena controlled the medical arrangements and refused independent viewing.
Detective Shaw reopened the death investigation.
The coffin was exhumed.
It was empty.
Vanessa claimed Arthur’s body had been cremated privately at his request. No crematorium possessed a record.
A video from the funeral home showed Helena wheeling a covered gurney through a rear exit the night before burial.
Arthur might still be alive.
Or his body had been moved to hide evidence.
Samuel remembered something Leah once told him: “Your grandfather built safes for people and exits for himself.”
The mansion plans revealed a medical bunker beneath the chapel. It had independent air, power, and communications. Gideon never knew it existed.
Inside, they found recent food packages, blood-pressure medication, and a bed.
Arthur was not there.
A camera file showed him alive three days after his public death. Weak but conscious, he dictated amendments to the trust while Helena stood beyond the frame.
Then Vanessa entered.
“You have lost,” Arthur told her.
“No,” she answered. “You have simply run out of witnesses.”
The video ended when someone disconnected the camera.
A hidden microphone continued recording.
Vanessa demanded the location of Leah and Samuel. Arthur refused. Helena administered something. Arthur’s breathing slowed.
Then a third voice spoke.
Daniel.
Faint, disoriented, but alive in the same room.
Father?
Arthur answered, “I am here.”
The recording captured their first contact in fourteen years—and perhaps their last.
Investigators found two sets of medical restraints. Vanessa had briefly held father and son together beneath the mansion before moving them.
A coded inventory on the bunker wall listed medical shipments to the Kingsley yacht, Sovereign.
Satellite records showed the yacht left port under a false registry the morning Samuel arrived.
Its declared destination was Bermuda.
Its fuel load could carry it much farther.
Gideon studied the route.
Arthur once owned an unfinished island resort in the Azores. Vanessa sold it publicly five years earlier to a shell company controlled by Helena.
The yacht was heading there.
So was an unregistered aircraft that departed the Iowa laboratory.
