The Room Behind the Library

Chapter 03 - The Room Behind the Library
The blackout lasted twenty-three seconds.
Every exterior gate remained locked. No alarm recorded an exit. Yet Samuel had vanished from a kitchen guarded by two officers.
Vanessa accused him of staging the disappearance.
Gideon ordered the mansion searched room by room.
Rosa found a strip of gray cloth caught beneath the library door. Beyond it, dust on the floor showed small footprints ending at Arthur’s bookcase.
The brass disk had opened a hidden latch.
Behind the shelves, a narrow passage descended into the walls.
Gideon, Rosa, and Detective Evelyn Shaw entered with flashlights. Vanessa insisted on following. Marcus remained near the back, speaking quietly into his radio.
They found Samuel in a small archive room, not kidnapped but hiding beneath a desk. He had heard someone outside the kitchen whisper, “Take the boy before the test.”
The passage had opened when he pressed the brass disk into a lion-shaped indentation.
Arthur had built the archive after Daniel disappeared.
Inside were maps, family photographs, cassette tapes, and newspaper clippings about a ferry accident that supposedly killed Daniel Kingsley and six employees. No bodies had been recovered.
A portrait of Daniel hung above the desk.
Samuel looked at it for a long time.
“That is my father.”
Vanessa scoffed. “Your mother showed you photographs.”
“No.”
Samuel pointed toward Daniel’s left hand. The index finger bent inward from an old fracture.
“I have the same finger.”
It was not proof. It was enough to deepen the silence.
Gideon searched the desk and found the missing half of Samuel’s burned photograph. Joined together, the image showed Daniel holding the newborn while Leah stood beside him. Arthur had written a date on the back.
The child would now be ten.
Vanessa reached for it.
Detective Shaw took it first.
In a locked drawer, they found a compact tape recorder. Arthur’s voice filled the room.
“If Samuel reaches this archive, then Leah kept her promise and I failed mine. Daniel was not lost by accident. Someone inside Kingsley House altered the ferry manifest and paid the crew to change course.”
The tape clicked.
Arthur continued.
“I believed Vanessa helped Daniel escape. I was wrong. She helped erase him.”
Vanessa stared at the recorder.
“This is fabricated.”
The next sentence named a private clinic called Greenhaven and a patient registered under the initials D.K.
Marcus stepped backward.
Detective Shaw noticed the black square ring on his hand.
“Do not move.”
He reached inside his jacket.
Gideon pulled Samuel behind the desk.

Marcus produced not a weapon, but a remote control. He pressed one button.
Smoke began pouring through the archive vents.
