Chapter 06 - Greenhaven
Greenhaven occupied an old stone hospital in the Pennsylvania hills.
By the time Detective Shaw arrived, the west wing was blackened and the patient database had been erased. Staff claimed the facility treated people under court-sealed identities and could not discuss individual cases.
A nurse named Priya Noll contacted Gideon from a payphone.
She had cared for D.K. for seven years.
The patient was a dark-haired man with burns along one shoulder and memory damage caused by prolonged sedation. He repeatedly drew the same image: two stone lions and a little boy holding a brass disk.
Daniel Kingsley was alive.
Priya said Vanessa visited him every three months. She called herself his wife, though Daniel reacted with fear whenever he heard her voice.
“Where did they move him?” Gideon asked.
“I don’t know. But he left something.”
Priya delivered a notebook hidden inside a laundry cart. Daniel’s writing began as scattered marks and slowly became coherent.
Vanessa changed the ferry route.
Marcus caused the engine fire.
Leah survived.
Arthur thinks I am dead.
The final pages contained sketches of an underground railway platform beneath Kingsley House. Arthur’s grandfather had built it during wartime to evacuate the family.
Samuel recognized the tunnel entrance.
His mother had drawn the same arch on the back of the sealed letter.
The passage opened beneath the mansion greenhouse. Investigators entered with a warrant and found fresh tire marks, medical restraints, and an empty wheelchair.
Daniel had been transported through his childhood home without the household knowing.
A camera in the tunnel captured Vanessa, Helena, and Marcus moving a covered stretcher at 2:06 a.m. on the night Greenhaven burned.
Marcus was arrested.
This time, the court denied bail.
He requested a deal.
He admitted sabotaging the ferry fourteen years earlier, but claimed Daniel was never meant to die. Vanessa wanted him declared dead so she could control Philip, Arthur, and the trust. When Daniel survived, Helena sedated him and created a false psychiatric record.
“Where is he now?” Shaw asked.
Marcus looked toward Samuel through the interview-room glass.
“Vanessa will trade him for the boy’s signature.”
Samuel was ten.
He could not legally transfer the trust.
