The burned photograph held another clue.
Under magnification, a shop sign appeared behind Leah and Daniel. It belonged to a bookbinder in Prague. Gideon traced the image to a trip Daniel took one year after his supposed death.
Leah had not merely survived the ferry attack.
She had helped Daniel escape.
She was born Leah Moreno, a forensic archivist hired by Arthur to authenticate old family contracts. She discovered Vanessa had altered the founder’s trust and warned Daniel. After the sabotage, Leah moved him through Europe while he recovered.
Then Helena found them.
Daniel disappeared into Greenhaven. Leah returned to the United States pregnant and lived under the name Hale, hiding Samuel in plain sight.
Arthur eventually located her.
Their letters revealed a difficult alliance. Arthur wanted to announce Samuel immediately. Leah refused until Vanessa’s network was exposed.
The final letter from Leah was dated three weeks earlier.
I found the original birth registry and Daniel’s medical orders. If I do not arrive at Kingsley House, assume Marcus intercepted me. Samuel knows only what he must know to reach Gideon.
The envelope Samuel carried contained more than Arthur’s declaration. Microscopic writing along its edge formed a storage number at Baltimore Central Station.
Inside the locker, police found Leah’s suitcase, blood on the handle, and a recording device.
Her voice played through Gideon’s phone.
“If Samuel is hearing this, I am sorry. I wanted you to have a childhood longer than the truth allowed.”
She described following Helena to a private airstrip where Daniel was transferred. She recorded aircraft numbers and photographed Vanessa meeting foreign medical contractors.
A struggle interrupted the recording.
A man demanded the letter.
Leah shouted, “He already has it.”
A car door slammed.
The final sound was a train announcement for platform twelve.
Security footage showed Helena and two men forcing Leah into a maintenance van.
The van belonged to Kingsley Agricultural Research.
Its GPS ended at an abandoned seed laboratory in Iowa.
By the time agents reached it, the building was empty.
On one wall, Leah had scratched a message into peeling paint:
DANIEL IS NOT THE ONLY PRISONER.

One belonged to Mara Bell, Owen’s biological mother.
