Chapter 13 - The Trial of the White Dress
Vanessa entered court wearing white.
Her attorneys described the color as coincidence. Newspapers called it strategy.
She faced charges involving kidnapping, fraud, attempted murder, medical abuse, evidence destruction, and conspiracy. Helena, Marcus, Judge Bell, and several clinic administrators were tried separately or entered plea agreements.
Vanessa’s defense argued that she inherited chaos created by Arthur and Daniel. She claimed she protected an unstable family and rescued Owen from abandonment. Every illegal act, she said, had been an emergency measure.
Mara Bell testified first.
She described being pressured to surrender her newborn, trying to reverse the adoption, and waking inside a clinic under a false name. She spent eleven years being told her insistence that she had a son proved she was delusional.
Owen listened from a protected room.
Leah testified about the ferry, Daniel’s escape, Samuel’s childhood, and her abduction. She did not portray herself as fearless.
“I was terrified most of the time,” she said. “Fear did not make Vanessa’s documents true.”
Daniel testified by video. His memory contained gaps, but medical records, notebooks, and footage supported his account.
Arthur entered the courtroom in a wheelchair.
Vanessa looked at him for the first time since the island.
“You made me do everything,” she said.
Arthur answered, “I made many failures. Your choices remain yours.”
Samuel did not testify in open court.
His recorded interview focused on the letter, the apartment abduction, and the mansion gate. Vanessa’s attorney suggested Leah taught him what to say.
Samuel replied, “My mother taught me where to go. Vanessa taught me why.”
The sealed letter was displayed to the jury.
Its final page contained Arthur’s warning:
Any adult who asks the child to prove his worth before offering him safety has already failed this family.
Vanessa had done exactly that on the mansion steps.
The jury deliberated six days.
She was convicted on nearly every major count.
When officers approached, she turned toward Owen.

But he did not call her mother.
