CHAPTER 13: The Locked Office Upstairs

Evelyn knew where the missing records would be.
Not in the public archive. Not in the board portal. Not in the legal storage room Meredith allowed auditors to inspect.
They would be upstairs in the private office Meredith had used since Harrison’s health began declining.
The detectives followed Evelyn, Harrison, Meredith, and both attorneys to the executive floor. Noah stayed downstairs with a uniformed officer and an elderly guest named Mrs. Callahan, who had quietly taken off her diamond shawl and wrapped it around him like armor.
The elevator ride was silent.
Meredith stared straight ahead, her reflection multiplied in the mirrored walls. In every reflection, she looked a little less certain.
The office door required a keycard.
Meredith claimed she did not have it.
Evelyn held up her own.
“Crisis access,” she said.
Meredith looked at her with hatred so sudden it startled even the detectives.
The door opened.
Inside, the office was immaculate. White orchids. Glass desk. Framed charity awards. A photograph of Meredith shaking hands with senators. Another of her beside Harrison, smiling like a devoted niece.
Detective Alvarez searched the desk with a warrant request already being processed by phone. Evelyn pointed to a wall cabinet.
“That cabinet is not listed in the office inventory,” she said.
Meredith said nothing.
The cabinet opened with a small key taped beneath the desk drawer.
Inside were envelopes.
Old ones.
Wax seals broken. Hospital correspondence. Ruth Parker’s first handwritten plea. Dr. Wells’s original statement. A photograph of Olivia holding newborn Noah, tears on her face, but smiling.
Harrison took the photograph with shaking hands.
On the back, Olivia had written one sentence.
Dad, if you are reading this, I tried to come home.
Harrison made a sound no one in that office would ever forget.
It was not loud.
It was worse.
It was the sound of a father realizing grief had been manufactured for him by someone he trusted.
Meredith finally spoke.
“I did what I had to do.”

Detective Alvarez turned toward her.
And the office that had protected her for nine years became the room where she began to fall.
