CHAPTER 9: The Call From Connecticut

Dr. Marian Wells answered on the fourth ring.

Her voice came through Evelyn’s speakerphone, thin but alert.

“Harrison?” she asked after he identified himself. “Is this about Olivia?”

Meredith went pale.

Harrison’s eyes closed for half a second.

“Yes,” he said. “And her child.”

There was silence on the line.

Then a soft breath.

“So he found you.”

Noah looked up.

The room seemed to tilt.

Harrison gripped the back of a nearby chair. “You knew?”

“I knew a child was born,” Dr. Wells said. “I knew Ruth Parker took him out under emergency instructions from Olivia. I did not know where they went after that. Ruth believed the family was compromised.”

Meredith whispered, “This is absurd.”

Dr. Wells heard her voice.

“Is Meredith there?”

No one answered.

The doctor continued, and her voice hardened. “Then listen carefully. Olivia was not unstable when she gave birth. She was terrified. She told me she had discovered forged trust amendments removing her unborn child from inheritance protections. She said if anything happened to her, Ruth was to take the baby and hide him until Harrison could be reached safely.”

Harrison looked at Meredith.

Meredith took one step back.

Evelyn’s hand trembled around the phone.

“Why didn’t you come forward?” Evelyn asked.

“I tried,” Dr. Wells said. “My statement disappeared from the hospital file. Then my license was threatened through an anonymous complaint. I received a settlement offer from an Aldridge attorney I had never met. I refused it. After that, my husband was followed for three months.”

Noah did not understand every word, but he understood enough.

“My mom was scared because of her?” he asked.

The question broke something in Harrison.

Dr. Wells spoke gently. “Your mother loved you, Noah. She held you for eleven minutes before Ruth carried you out. She kept saying, ‘He survives. Promise me he survives.’”

Noah’s lips trembled.

Harrison turned fully toward Meredith.

“Did you know?” he asked.

Meredith’s mouth opened.

For once, no perfect answer came.
