CHAPTER 10: The White Gloves

The phrase returned like a blade.

A woman with white gloves.

Harrison repeated it softly. “Noah said Ruth warned him about a woman with white gloves.”

Meredith’s face tightened. “Many women wear gloves at formal events.”

Evelyn turned to one of the display screens near the gala entrance. “The archive presentation tonight includes old footage from the foundation’s tenth anniversary. I remember approving it.”

Meredith moved instantly. “That has nothing to do with this.”

But Evelyn was already walking to the media console.

The large screen at the end of the lobby flickered from the gala logo to archival footage. Guests saw a younger Harrison cutting a ribbon. They saw Olivia beside him, radiant and nervous, one hand resting protectively over her stomach.

Then the footage shifted to a hallway clip recorded that same night.

Olivia argued with someone just outside the ballroom.

The image was grainy, but clear enough.

Meredith stood in front of her.

Wearing white gloves.

The room inhaled at once.

In the footage, Meredith leaned close to Olivia and said something the old camera had not recorded. Olivia stepped back, shaking her head. Meredith grabbed her wrist. Olivia pulled away and disappeared toward the service corridor.

The clip ended.

No one spoke.

Meredith lifted her chin. “That proves nothing.”

Harrison’s voice was low. “It proves you lied when you said you barely spoke to her that night.”

“I did not remember.”

“You remembered everything.”

Evelyn searched the digital archive and found another file attached to the same date. It had been hidden under an unrelated label: Silver Inventory, Basement Level.

She opened it.

The screen showed Ruth Parker, younger then, moving quickly through a service hallway with a bundle in her arms. Olivia followed behind her, weak and terrified, gripping the wall. A man in a dark suit appeared at the end of the corridor.

Ruth turned away from him and ran.

The bundle moved.

A baby cried silently through old footage.

Noah stared at the screen.

“That’s me?” he whispered.

Harrison’s hand found his shoulder again.

“Yes,” he said. “That’s you.”

May you like

The empire had not cracked anymore.

It had opened.
