CHAPTER 14: Olivia’s Last Message

At the bottom of the cabinet was a small digital recorder.
Its batteries had long since died, but Evelyn found a charging cable in the office drawer. No one spoke while the device blinked to life.
Harrison stood near the window, holding Olivia’s photograph against his chest.
Meredith’s attorney advised everyone not to play the recording until proper legal review.
Detective Alvarez said, “Noted.”
Then he pressed play.
Static filled the room first.
Then Olivia’s voice.
Weak. Breathless. Alive.
“Dad, if Ruth gets this to you, please listen before anyone else speaks.”
Harrison covered his mouth.
“I know Meredith has told you I’m unstable. I know she has documents. I know she has lawyers. But I am not confused. I found the amended trust. I found the payments. I found the plan to declare my baby illegitimate before he was even born.”
Meredith closed her eyes.
Olivia’s voice trembled, but did not break.
“My son’s name is Noah James Aldridge. He is yours. He is mine. He is not a threat to the family. He is the family.”
Evelyn wiped her cheek quickly, as if embarrassed by her own tears.
The recording continued.
“If I disappear, do not let them turn my child into a rumor. Ruth is taking him somewhere safe. She is the only person I trust tonight. I wanted to come to you, Dad. I tried. But every door had Meredith behind it.”
Harrison whispered, “Olivia.”
The last part of the recording was almost too soft to hear.
“Noah, if you ever hear this, I am sorry I could not hold you longer. Survive first. Ask questions later. And when you find the silver moon, look for your grandfather. He loved me before the money did.”
The recording ended.
No one moved.
Meredith opened her eyes.
For the first time, there was no argument left that could sound respectable.
Detective Alvarez took the recorder as evidence.
Harrison turned toward Meredith.
“You let me mourn a daughter who was begging to come home,” he said.
Meredith lifted her chin, but her voice shook.

“She would have destroyed everything.”
“No,” Harrison said. “You did.”
