CHAPTER 8: The First Crack in the Empire

Harrison ordered the doors closed.

Not locked. Closed.

There was a difference, and everyone felt it.

No one was being trapped, but no one was being allowed to drift away from what had just happened. The gala had turned from celebration to witness room.

“Call Dr. Marian Wells,” Harrison said.

Meredith stiffened.

Evelyn noticed.

“Dr. Wells retired six years ago,” Meredith said quickly. “She moved overseas, I believe.”

“No,” Harrison said. “She lives in Connecticut. I sent flowers when her husband died.”

Meredith’s smile thinned.

Evelyn took out her phone. “I can contact the medical board registry.”

Meredith stepped closer. “That will not be necessary.”

“It is necessary,” Harrison said.

The old man’s voice carried the weight of every building in the Aldridge name.

Noah stood beside him, still clutching his backpack. A few coins remained on the floor, but several guests had quietly begun picking them up. Not for themselves. For him.

A man in a tuxedo placed three quarters into Noah’s open palm without looking at the cameras.

A young woman handed him a nickel and whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Noah looked confused by the apologies.

He had expected cruelty.

Kindness frightened him more.

At the edge of the room, Meredith opened her purse and began typing a message with one hand hidden against her side.

Evelyn saw the movement.

“Mrs. Vale,” she said. “Please put the phone away.”

Meredith’s head snapped up. “Excuse me?”

“Until we verify the document, no one should contact outside parties connected to foundation records.”

The guests turned.

Meredith laughed once. “You are not in a position to give me orders.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “But Mr. Aldridge is.”

Harrison extended his hand.

“Your phone, Meredith.”

Meredith stared at him.

For twenty years, she had managed his appointments, his public appearances, his press lines, and eventually his grief. She had become the person people went through to reach him.

Now he was reaching past her.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

That was when everyone understood: innocent people defended themselves with truth.

Meredith was defending a secret.
