CHAPTER 16: The DNA Test Was Not the Beginning
The newspapers wanted the DNA test to be the story.
They called it the final proof, the scientific ending, the undeniable key that turned rumor into fact. For three days, headlines flashed across every screen in the city.

But for Noah, the DNA test was not the beginning.
The beginning was the first morning he woke in Harrison’s guest room and did not hear Ruth coughing from the next bed.
It was the first breakfast where a cook asked if he wanted pancakes, oatmeal, eggs, or all three, and Noah answered, “Whatever is cheapest,” because he did not know food could be offered without calculation.
It was the first time Harrison took him to a children’s store and Noah chose nothing because every price tag made him afraid.
It was the first night he asked if he was allowed to keep the bedroom light on.
Harrison said yes.
Noah asked, “Even if it wastes electricity?”
Harrison had to leave the room for a minute because grief rose too fast for him to swallow.
When the DNA test came back, it confirmed what Olivia’s voice, Ruth’s courage, and Harrison’s heart already knew.

Noah James Aldridge was Harrison’s grandson.
Evelyn delivered the result in the study. Harrison read it twice, then handed it to Noah.
Noah stared at the numbers.
“So I’m not in trouble?” he asked.
Harrison sat beside him. “No.”
“They won’t send me away?”
“No.”
“If I break something?”
Harrison’s eyes filled. “Still no.”
Noah folded the paper carefully and placed it beside the birth certificate.
Then he reached into his backpack, pulled out one penny, and set it on Harrison’s desk.
“What’s that for?” Harrison asked.
Noah looked embarrassed. “Grandma said when someone gives you a home, you should give something back.”
