CHAPTER 15: The Bride Walks Alone

Vanessa refused to sign the public statement.
She tore the top page in half and threw it onto the cake table, leaving white paper among white frosting like another decoration ruined by her hands.
“I won’t let you write my ending,” she said.
Adrian nodded once. “Then you’ll write it in court.”
The officers did not arrest her in the ballroom. Not yet. The attorney explained that certain charges required formal processing, and Vanessa clung to that delay as if it were victory.
She lifted her chin, gathered the front of her gown, and walked toward the exit.
No bridesmaids followed.
Her friends stared at their phones. Her mother looked away. The guests parted without speaking, creating a path colder than any police escort.
At the door, Vanessa turned back one last time.
The image was almost theatrical: the abandoned bride in satin, the groom with dried frosting on his face, the broken cake, the silent crowd.
“You’ll miss me,” she said.
Adrian looked at her, and something like grief passed through his eyes. Not grief for losing her. Grief for the version of her he had once tried to believe in.
“No,” he said quietly. “I’ll miss who I thought you were.”
That hurt her more than anger would have.
Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came. She turned and left the ballroom alone.
The doors closed behind her.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Claire exhaled shakily. Margaret put a hand on Adrian’s shoulder. The attorney closed his files. The servers began clearing champagne no one wanted anymore.
Adrian finally picked up a napkin and wiped the rest of the frosting from his face.
A small piece of cake fell from his collar onto the floor.
Claire saw it and laughed once through tears.
Adrian looked at her, surprised.
Then he laughed too.
May you like
Not because it was funny.
Because they had survived.
