CHAPTER 7: The Prenup in the Bouquet

Vanessa’s bouquet lay on a chair near the cake table, wrapped in white silk ribbon and tiny pearl pins. No one had noticed it since the ceremony. It had looked harmless, elegant, expensive.

Adrian pointed to it.

“Open the ribbon,” he said to the attorney.

Vanessa’s head snapped toward him. “Don’t touch my bouquet.”

The attorney did not move until one of the officers gave a slight nod. Then he picked up the bouquet and carefully untied the silk wrap.

A folded document slipped out from between the stems.

Gasps spread through the ballroom.

Vanessa’s mother covered her mouth. Raymond Hale’s face hardened.

Adrian looked at the document without surprise. “That is the contract Vanessa planned to have me sign tonight after the reception, while I was drunk, embarrassed, and pressured by both families.”

“That’s a lie,” Vanessa snapped.

The attorney unfolded the paper. “It appears to be an amended marital agreement transferring voting authority over Whitmore Hospitality shares to Vanessa Hale Whitmore in the event of Adrian Whitmore’s mental incapacity, public scandal, or voluntary resignation.”

The words hit the room like ice water.

A shareholder at table four stood. “Voting authority? Over how many shares?”

“Enough to control the board,” Adrian said.

Vanessa’s face twisted. “You told me you didn’t care about the company. You said you wanted peace.”

“I wanted a wife,” Adrian replied. “Not an owner.”

The room fell silent again.

The cruelty of the cake suddenly looked different. It had not been childish. It had been strategic. Public humiliation. Viral footage. A groom covered in frosting, laughed at by his own guests, looking weak and unstable. Perfect material for a future claim that Adrian could not protect the family brand.

Claire looked at the bouquet.

“You always hid knives in beautiful things,” she said.

Vanessa stared at her. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Claire opened the envelope she had carried in.

“No,” she said calmly. “But your accountant does.”
