CHAPTER 6: The Sister They Hid Away

Claire Whitmore had once been the sharpest voice in the Whitmore family boardroom.
Before the accident, she had run the hotel group’s charitable housing division, refusing to let developers push working families out of neighborhoods where Whitmore resorts expanded. She was loved by employees, feared by corrupt partners, and trusted by Adrian more than anyone in the world.
Then, two years ago, Claire had supposedly driven off a private road after drinking too much at a family retreat.
That was the story Vanessa repeated gently at dinners.
Poor Claire.
Troubled Claire.
Unstable Claire.
But Claire had never believed the accident was an accident. She remembered a glass of water that tasted bitter. She remembered Vanessa standing too close on the balcony. She remembered waking up in a hospital bed while people whispered that she had embarrassed the family.
No one could prove anything.
Until now.
Claire rolled forward slowly, every turn of the wheels louder than the music had been moments earlier. Adrian moved toward her instinctively, but she lifted a hand.
“I can do it,” she said.
Vanessa recovered enough to laugh once, a thin sound. “This is insane. She’s not well. Everyone knows she’s not well.”
Claire looked at the guests.
“That is exactly what she needed you to believe.”
Raymond Hale slammed his hand on the table. “This is a wedding, not a courtroom.”
The attorney at the back spoke for the first time. “Actually, Mr. Hale, several court officers are present.”
The doors opened wider.
Two men with badges entered quietly.
The guests stopped whispering.
Adrian still stood near the broken cake, frosting drying on his cheek, the red box open in his hand. He did not look triumphant. He looked tired.
Claire stopped beside him and placed the envelope on the cake table.
“The first time she tried to take this family,” Claire said, “she nearly killed me.”

Then she turned to Vanessa.
“The second time, she chose to do it in front of witnesses.”
