CHAPTER 16: The Morning After the Wedding

By sunrise, the video had already spread.
Not the clip Vanessa wanted. Not the funny bride smashing cake into the groom’s face. That version appeared first, but within an hour, the full footage followed: the red velvet box, the hidden drive, Claire’s entrance, Raymond’s threat, Vanessa’s plan, the board vote.
America woke up to a wedding scandal.
News anchors called it The Whitmore Cake Collapse. Commentators debated wealth, humiliation, family power, and whether public cruelty should ever be dismissed as a joke. Former employees of Hale Development began posting stories online. Vendors came forward. A charity director revealed that funds promised by Vanessa had never arrived.
Adrian did not watch any of it.
He spent the morning in Claire’s hospital suite, where doctors reviewed her long-term treatment plan and finally agreed to reopen questions about the night of her accident.
Claire sat by the window, holding the red velvet box.
“You should keep the ring,” she said.
Adrian shook his head. “Mom gave it to you.”
“I don’t want to be the symbol of a family legacy.”
“You already are.”
Claire smiled faintly. “That sounds heavy.”
“It is.”
They sat in comfortable silence.
After a while, Claire said, “Did you love her?”
Adrian looked out at the city. For once, he did not choose the answer that sounded strongest.
“I loved the person she performed when she needed to be loved.”
Claire reached over and touched his hand.
“That still counts as grief,” she said.
Adrian nodded.
Outside the suite, Margaret spoke quietly with legal counsel. The family had lost a wedding, gained a scandal, and uncovered a conspiracy that would take months to untangle.
But inside the room, something simpler had returned.
Trust.
Adrian leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
For the first time in years, he was not managing Vanessa’s moods, protecting her image, or apologizing for her cruelty.

He was tired.
But he was free.
