CHAPTER 17: Vanessa's Version
Vanessa gave her first interview three days later.
She wore cream instead of white, no veil, no diamonds, just a soft cashmere sweater chosen carefully to make her look vulnerable. Her publicist called the scandal “a private family misunderstanding exploited by powerful people.”
The interviewer asked about the cake.
Vanessa smiled sadly. “It was a playful moment taken out of context. Adrian and I always teased each other.”
Then the screen behind the interviewer played the full clip again.
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
The interviewer asked about the hidden contract in the bouquet.
“My legal team handles documents,” Vanessa said. “I don’t review every page.”
The interviewer asked about Claire.
Vanessa’s voice softened. “Claire has been through a lot. I wish her healing.”
The interviewer asked about the video where Vanessa said Claire would not be a problem because everyone thought she was crazy.
This time, Vanessa had no answer.
The interview ended early.
By evening, two more witnesses had contacted Whitmore legal counsel. One was a former assistant who said Vanessa had ordered her to monitor Claire’s medication schedule. Another was a driver who remembered taking Raymond Hale to a private clinic the morning after Claire’s accident.
Vanessa’s attempt to control the story only widened it.
Adrian watched none of the interview, but Claire did.
She sat with Margaret in the hotel suite, remote in hand, face unreadable.
When Vanessa’s voice trembled on screen, Margaret asked, “Does it hurt to see her like that?”
Claire thought for a moment.
“Yes,” she said. “But not because I feel sorry for her.”
“Then why?”
“Because she still thinks tears are a strategy.”
Margaret turned off the television.
In the silence that followed, Claire opened the red velvet box and looked at the diamond.
For years, Vanessa had wanted the ring because it meant power.
