CHAPTER 4: The Red Velvet Box

The ballroom did not understand what it was seeing yet. To most guests, the box looked romantic. A ruined groom holding a diamond ring after a cruel joke. A chance for redemption. A perfect viral ending.

But Vanessa understood the black memory drive.

She knew because it was not supposed to exist.

Her eyes darted from the box to Adrian’s face. “What is that?”

Adrian’s thumb rested on the lid. Frosting still clung to the back of his hand. He did not wipe it away. Somehow the mess made him look less ridiculous and more dangerous, like a man who no longer cared about appearing polished.

“This,” he said, “is the part of the wedding you did not plan.”

A murmur traveled through the guests.

Raymond Hale stood from his chair. “Adrian, whatever this is, handle it privately.”

Adrian did not look at him.

Vanessa swallowed. “Baby, you’re upset. I get it. I went too far with the cake. I’m sorry. Let’s not ruin our wedding over a joke.”

“Our wedding?” Adrian repeated.

His voice was quiet, but the microphone near the cake table caught it. The speakers carried it across the entire ballroom.

A server near the wall froze with a tray of champagne. The pianist’s hands stopped above the keys.

Adrian turned slightly toward the guests.

“Before we continue,” he said, “I need everyone here to understand one thing. What happened with the cake was not the reason I opened this box.”

Vanessa’s face paled.

“This was already planned,” Adrian continued. “The cake only made it easier.”

Someone gasped near the front.

Vanessa reached for the box, but Adrian moved it out of her reach without raising his voice.

“Don’t,” he said.

One word. No shouting. No threat. Just a boundary so clear that even Vanessa stopped moving.

At the back of the ballroom, a man in a gray suit stood up. He was not family. He was not a friend.

He was the Whitmore family attorney.

And he had been waiting all night.
