CHAPTER 13: Victoria’s Last Performance

Victoria’s attorney arrived after midnight.

He was a sharp man in a charcoal suit, famous for making ugly things disappear. But when he saw the evidence board forming in the ballroom, his confidence faded.

Victoria pulled him aside. “This is a misunderstanding. The child is being coached.”

The attorney lowered his voice. “Did you know about the child?”

Victoria did not answer quickly enough.

He exhaled.

“Then stop speaking.”

But Victoria had survived too long by controlling rooms. Silence felt like surrender. She walked back into the ballroom and raised her voice.

“Everyone here knows what this is,” she said. “Edward is grieving. He is vulnerable. A criminal and a child have exploited that grief. I tried to protect this family from humiliation.”

A reporter asked, “By grabbing a child’s face?”

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“She was trespassing.”

Edward stepped out of the private room, holding Lily’s hand.

The guests moved aside.

He did not shout. He did not need to.

“This child is Lily Anna Ashborne,” he said. “Until the court confirms what my heart already knows, she is under my protection. Anyone who questions her right to be here may leave my hotel immediately.”

No one moved.

Victoria’s attorney whispered her name, warning her.

She ignored him.

“You are making a fool of yourself over a dirty little—”

Daniel cut her off.

“Finish that sentence,” he said, “and I will personally testify that you knew exactly who she was the moment you saw the locket.”

Victoria stared at him.

Then Lily spoke.

“You looked scared when I said my mother’s name.”

The child’s voice was small, but the microphones caught it.

The room heard everything.
