CHAPTER 3: Victoria’s Hands

The sentence cut through the room.

For one second, no one laughed.

Victoria’s smile twitched.

“What did you say?”

Lily’s voice shook. “My mother said this place stole our name.”

A waiter froze with a tray of champagne. Somewhere near the back, a man coughed into his fist. The head of hotel security moved closer, sensing trouble but unsure where to stand. In that room, power had a shape, and Victoria stood at its center.

She dug her fingers into Lily’s cheeks again. Not enough to bruise in front of witnesses, but enough to make the child wince.

“Listen carefully,” Victoria said. “Little girls like you do not accuse families like mine.”

Lily’s breath broke. She tried to turn her face away, but Victoria held her still. Mud streaked under the woman’s diamond ring. The contrast made the crowd stare: one hand polished and glittering, one child trembling and dirty.

Edward Ashborne took one slow step forward.

His glass remained in his hand, untouched.

“Victoria,” he said.

The room turned toward him.

Victoria loosened her grip but did not release Lily. “Edward, forgive me. I was handling a disturbance.”

“She asked for me,” Edward said.

“She is confused.”

Lily looked at him. The old man’s face seemed familiar, not because she had seen him before, but because her mother had kept a photograph beneath her pillow. A younger version of this man had stood beside a woman with Lily’s eyes.

Lily’s mouth opened, but fear swallowed the words.

Victoria felt the change in the room and smiled again, sharper now.

“Security,” she called. “Take her outside.”

Lily clutched the pouch so tightly her knuckles whitened.

“No,” she cried. “Please. I walked all night.”

That was when the pouch slipped open.

A small silver locket fell onto the marble.

It spun once beneath the chandeliers and stopped at Edward Ashborne’s feet.
