Victoria’s trial did not begin for months, but her punishment started immediately.
Not the legal punishment. That would come with documents, charges, and prison walls.
The first punishment was silence.
No invitations arrived. No calls were returned. No photographers waited outside her townhouse except the ones hoping to catch her shame. The same people who once laughed when she humiliated Lily now looked away when she entered a room.
She had mistaken society for loyalty.
It had only ever been fear.
During a preliminary hearing, she saw Lily again. The child wore a navy coat and held Edward’s hand. Her face was clean now, her hair brushed, but she still carried the locket.
Victoria stared at it.
Lily looked back.
For a moment, Victoria expected hate. Hate she could understand. Hate would make the child smaller, easier to dismiss.
But Lily only looked sad.
That hurt worse.
Outside the courtroom, a reporter asked Lily what she wanted to say to the woman who threw her out.
Edward started to shield her, but Lily squeezed his hand.
She looked at the cameras.
“My mom said people show who they are by how they treat someone who can’t help them,” she said. “I think everyone saw.”
The clip spread everywhere.
It became the sentence attached to Victoria’s fall.
