CHAPTER 15: The First Court Hearing

Victoria arrived at court wearing cream silk and pearls.

It was a mistake.

The image of perfection looked cruel beside Lily, who wore a simple blue dress and held Samuel’s hand with both of hers. The bruised shadows under the child’s eyes had faded, but the memory of that night still sat on her face.

The judge reviewed temporary guardianship.

Victoria’s attorney argued that the Ashborne family was acting emotionally and that Lily’s identity required formal verification. Edward’s attorney agreed to DNA testing but requested immediate protective custody under Edward’s care.

Then the prosecutor presented the gala footage.

The courtroom watched Victoria grip Lily’s face, mock her, order security to remove her, and step on the locket. No music softened it. No chandeliers distracted from it. On the screen, it looked exactly like what it was: an adult using power to crush a child.

Victoria stared straight ahead.

The judge’s expression hardened.

“Until further review,” the judge said, “the minor child will remain under protective placement with Mr. Edward Ashborne, with supervised access restrictions pending the investigation.”

Lily did not understand all the words.

She understood Edward’s hand squeezing hers.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

“Lily, are you really an Ashborne?”

“Edward, did your family cover this up?”

“Victoria, did you know who she was?”

Edward stopped only once.

He looked at the cameras and said, “My granddaughter came to us covered in mud because we left her outside our lives. That will never happen again.”

Lily leaned against him.

For the first time in years, she did not feel like she had to run.
