CHAPTER 17: The Boardroom Without Mercy

The next week brought resignations, arrests, and confessions.
Victoria’s former assistant turned over emails showing that Victoria had known Clara was alive after the staged crash. A retired officer admitted he had been paid to alter records. A foundation accountant revealed years of diverted charity funds disguised as outreach expenses.
The Ashborne empire did not collapse overnight.
It did something worse.
It bled in public.
Every headline carried Lily’s face from the gala footage: dirt on her cheeks, tears in her eyes, Victoria’s hands gripping her like she was an object. Public anger grew faster than any lawyer could contain.
Sponsors withdrew from Victoria’s charities. Social clubs revoked memberships. Friends who once praised her elegance told reporters they had always sensed something cold in her.
Victoria called them cowards.
Maybe they were.
But cowards know when power has changed owners.
In the boardroom, Edward removed three executives who had approved suspicious transfers. Daniel took over the internal audit. Samuel, despite his exhaustion, was invited to sit in as a witness.
“I’m not boardroom material,” Samuel said.
Edward looked at him. “You are the only man here who protected my family when it cost you everything.”
Samuel stayed.
At the end of the meeting, Edward announced the creation of the Clara Hart Ashborne Trust for missing and displaced children. It would begin with the money recovered from Victoria’s accounts.
Daniel looked at Lily, who was drawing butterflies on a legal pad.
“What do you think?” he asked her.
Lily shrugged shyly. “Can it help kids who are cold?”
May you like
Edward’s throat tightened.
“That will be the first thing it does.”
