CHAPTER 7: The Butterfly Locket

When Clara was seven, Edward had taken her to the old lake house after her mother’s funeral. She had refused to speak for three days. On the fourth night, fireflies rose over the water, and a butterfly landed on her sleeve. Edward bought her a silver locket the next morning and told her grief could still have wings.

He had never told another living soul.

Victoria had heard many family stories, but never that one.

She knew it. Edward saw it in her face.

Lily stood very still while he approached. The old man crouched, ignoring his age, ignoring the broken glass, ignoring the hundreds of eyes watching him.

“May I?” he asked, holding out the locket.

Lily nodded.

Edward fastened it around her neck. His hands shook so badly that Samuel had to help. When the clasp clicked, Lily touched the butterfly and cried harder, not from fear this time but from the terrible relief of being believed.

Edward’s voice broke. “What was your mother’s real name?”

Lily took a breath. “Clara Anna Ashborne.”

Daniel swore under his breath.

A woman near the front began crying. She had known Clara as a girl. Others stared at Victoria, remembering how she had taken control of the family foundation after Clara vanished, how she had pushed Edward to stop searching, how she had called grief an obsession.

Victoria lifted both hands. “Edward, think. This is manipulation. They chose this night because cameras are here.”

“Good,” Edward said. “Then let the cameras keep recording.”

For the first time, Victoria looked truly afraid.

Samuel reached into his coat and removed a sealed envelope wrapped in plastic.

“Clara gave me this before she died,” he said. “She said if Lily ever reached this family, the truth should come with her.”

Victoria lunged for it.

Daniel caught her wrist.

The ballroom gasped.
