CHAPTER 11: The Board Learns the Truth

Celeste’s power had never lived only in the mansion.
It lived in boardrooms, charity committees, magazine covers, and whispered invitations to dinners where decisions were made over expensive wine. She had spent years becoming the acceptable face of Blackwood Holdings while Adrian built towers, hotels, and medical centers across the country.
By four o’clock, that face was cracking on every screen in the executive conference room.
Adrian called an emergency board meeting.
Celeste tried to stop him.
“You’ll ruin the company,” she said.
He looked at her as officers escorted her into a chair for formal questioning.
“You used the company to ruin my wife.”
Those words traveled through the video call like a storm.
Directors who had smiled with Celeste at galas suddenly looked down at their papers. The general counsel asked for copies of the evidence. The chief financial officer went pale when Michael Stanton mentioned wire transfers.
Naomi did not attend the meeting.
She sat in the library with Mrs. Delaney, wrapped in a blanket, staring at the old wedding photo Adrian had placed on the table. It was small, taken outside a courthouse in the rain. Adrian wore no tuxedo. Naomi wore a blue dress she had bought on sale.
They had looked happy.
They had looked poor compared to the mansion.
They had looked real.
Mrs. Delaney poured tea with shaking hands.
“I knew something was wrong,” the housekeeper said. “But I was afraid of losing my job.”
Naomi did not answer immediately.
Then she said, “Fear is how people like her build houses.”
In the conference room, the board voted to suspend Celeste from every charitable foundation and freeze her access to Blackwood accounts.
Celeste laughed when she heard.
“You still don’t understand,” she told Adrian.

Then she said the sentence that changed the investigation.
“Your mother knew before I did.”
