CHAPTER 18: The Verdict

Celeste wore gray to court for the verdict.

No white suit. No diamonds. No smile.

Still, she tried to look untouchable.

The jury took less than six hours.

Naomi sat beside Adrian, their hands close but not touching. The baby was due in three weeks. Every movement beneath her ribs reminded her that life was continuing no matter what twelve strangers decided.

When the jury returned, Celeste looked straight ahead.

Guilty on fraud.

Guilty on evidence tampering.

Guilty on coercion.

Guilty on assault.

Her attorney placed a hand on her arm. Celeste shook it off.

The judge spoke about power, vulnerability, and the cruelty of using wealth to erase a pregnant woman’s identity. He ordered restitution, prison time, and permanent no-contact protection for Naomi and her child.

Celeste finally turned.

She looked past Adrian and directly at Naomi.

“You ruined me,” she said.

Naomi stood carefully.

“No,” she answered. “I survived you.”

The courtroom murmured.

Adrian looked at Naomi then, not with pity, not with guilt, but with something quieter and stronger: respect.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

Naomi did not answer most of them. But when one asked what justice felt like, she paused.

Justice did not feel like joy. It did not give back the staff room nights, the stolen letters, the fear of giving birth alone. It did not erase soup from memory or make trust simple again.

“It feels like breathing,” Naomi said.

Then she walked away from the cameras.

Adrian walked beside her, close enough to protect, far enough to let her choose.

And for the first time in two years, Naomi did not feel chased by the past.
