CHAPTER 14: The Child She Wanted Erased

The hospital suite was private, quiet, and nothing like the staff room where Naomi had spent her worst nights.
Adrian insisted on a full examination. Naomi agreed only after Detective Ramirez promised her statement could wait until morning. The baby’s heartbeat filled the room in steady waves, and Adrian stood near the wall with tears in his eyes, trying not to fall apart in front of her.
Naomi watched him from the bed.
“You can come closer,” she said.
He stepped forward carefully.
The nurse moved the monitor, and the sound grew louder.
For the first time, Adrian heard his child.
He covered his mouth.
Naomi looked away, but not before seeing what it did to him.
The doctor confirmed the soup had not burned her badly, but the fall had bruised her hip and knee. Stress was the greater danger. Naomi needed rest, safety, and no more emotional attacks.

The word sounded almost foreign.
Later, when the room emptied, Adrian sat beside her.
“I didn’t know,” he said.
“I know that now.”
“But knowing that doesn’t erase what happened.”
“No,” Naomi said. “It doesn’t.”
He nodded, accepting the answer like a sentence he deserved.
“I’ll sign anything you need,” he said. “Protection order. Separate residence. Divorce, if that’s what you want. I won’t trap you with my guilt.”
Naomi studied him.
Two years ago, she had loved him because he never used power to make himself bigger. Somewhere beneath the wealth and grief, that man was still there.
“I don’t know what I want from you,” she said.
Adrian looked at the monitor.
“Then I’ll start with what our child needs.”
May you like
Naomi’s hand moved to her stomach.
For the first time that day, she breathed without shaking.
