CHAPTER 15: The Trial of a Perfect Woman

The trial did not begin in a courtroom.
It began online.
The security footage leaked from somewhere inside the police department, though no one ever admitted it. Within hours, millions had seen Celeste Blackwood in her white suit throwing soup on a pregnant woman in a maid uniform. The internet named it before the evening news did.
The Marble Floor Video.
Celeste’s publicist resigned first. Then three charities removed her photograph. Then the hospital foundation returned her donation. By the time formal charges were filed, Celeste had lost the world she loved most: the one that applauded her.
Her attorneys argued misunderstanding, emotional distress, marital confusion, and unauthorized recording.
Detective Ramirez answered with evidence.
The video. The forged divorce. The fake emails. The stolen letters. The planted bracelet. The confession drafted to erase Naomi’s child.
Naomi testified three months later.
She wore a simple navy dress, her belly now unmistakable, her voice quiet but clear. Celeste refused to look at her at first. Then Naomi described sleeping under the same roof as the woman who had stolen her name.
The courtroom fell silent.
Adrian testified after her.
When the prosecutor asked when he realized Naomi had not abandoned him, he looked at the jury and said, “When I saw my wife on the floor and understood that my silence had been used as a weapon.”
Celeste finally looked up.
Not with remorse.
With hatred.
But hatred could not cross-examine a camera.

By the end of the week, her perfect life had been reduced to exhibits on a screen.
And Naomi walked out of court without lowering her eyes.
