CHAPTER 10: The Forged Divorce

The forged divorce papers were found in Celeste’s private office behind a false panel in a bookshelf.

She had kept everything.

That was the arrogance of people who believed money could turn evidence into insurance. There were copies of Naomi’s letters, marked unopened. There were screenshots of emails Celeste had sent from a fake legal account. There were wire transfers to a clerk in Connecticut, a private investigator in Atlanta, and a doctor who had signed a statement questioning Naomi’s pregnancy timeline.

Adrian read none of it in the room with Celeste.

He took the files into the hallway because his hands were shaking too badly.

Naomi stood there in borrowed clothes, pale but upright, one hand against the wall. She had refused to remain in bed when she heard the word divorce.

Adrian saw her and stopped.

“You shouldn’t be standing.”

“I need to know.”

He looked down at the papers.

“I thought you left me,” he said.

Naomi’s eyes filled.

“I thought you chose her.”

The silence between them was not empty. It was crowded with two stolen years.

Adrian handed her the first letter. It was still sealed. Her handwriting was on the envelope.

He had never seen it.

Naomi pressed the envelope to her chest and began to cry, not loudly, not dramatically, but with the exhaustion of someone whose pain had finally been witnessed.

Adrian wanted to hold her. He did not.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Naomi looked at him.

“Sorry doesn’t give me back the nights I slept in the staff room while your wedding portrait watched me.”

His face broke.

“No,” he said. “It doesn’t.”

Behind them, Celeste’s voice rose from the salon.

“You think a few papers can undo me?”

Naomi turned toward the sound.

May you like

Adrian did too.

And for the first time, they stood on the same side.
