CHAPTER 19: The Night Elijah Arrived

Elijah Brooks Blackwood was born during a thunderstorm.

Naomi laughed once when the first contraction came because it felt almost too dramatic, as if the sky had decided the Blackwood family required one more cinematic event. Adrian drove her to the hospital with both hands locked on the wheel and panic badly hidden behind calm breathing.

“You’re doing great,” he said for the sixth time.

Naomi glared through another contraction. “If you say that again, I’m naming him after the doctor.”

He nodded immediately. “Understood.”

For one brief moment, she laughed.

That laugh carried them through the doors.

Labor was long. Painful. Human. No mansion, no trial, no scandal could make it elegant. Adrian stayed when Naomi allowed him, left when she needed space, came back when she reached for him without looking.

At 2:17 a.m., Elijah entered the world screaming.

The sound broke Adrian.

The nurse placed the baby on Naomi’s chest, and Naomi began to cry in a way that did not resemble the tears from the salon floor. These tears were not humiliation. They were relief. They were proof.

Adrian stood beside the bed, looking at his son with awe and grief tangled together.

“He’s real,” he whispered.

Naomi looked up at him.

“He was always real.”

Adrian nodded, accepting the correction.

Later, after the nurse cleaned Elijah and the storm softened against the windows, Naomi let Adrian hold him. He did so with terrifying care, as if the child were made of breath.

Elijah opened one tiny hand against Adrian’s shirt.

Naomi watched them.

She was not ready to forgive everything.

But she was ready to stop living as if love and danger were the same thing.
