Chapter 17 - Eleanor Returned to the Table
Five years after the dinner, Eleanor invited Mara and Lila to a restorative meeting at a neutral center.
Mara almost refused.
She agreed after Eleanor accepted every condition: no family estate, no media, no request for forgiveness and no discussion of rebuilding the Hawthorne name.
They sat around a plain wooden table.
Eleanor described the moment she held Lila’s wrist.
“I told myself I was preventing Julian from hurting her. I was also preventing her from helping you.”
Lila said the restraint had felt familiar. Eleanor had always kept her physically safe enough to remain emotionally obedient.
Mara listened.
Eleanor apologized for treating her as the source of conflict rather than the person naming it.
Mara did not say she forgave her.
“I no longer need you to misunderstand me,” she said.
Eleanor cried quietly.
The meeting ended after ninety minutes.
No embrace followed.
Months later, Mara agreed to another conversation.
Their relationship remained limited and honest.
