Julian’s Counterattack

Chapter 09 - Julian’s Counterattack
Julian was released on restrictive bail before the homicide charges were finalized.
He could not enter the estate, contact Mara or access company systems.
He still controlled a network of attorneys, publicists and loyal executives.
Stories appeared online describing Mara as an ambitious employee who seduced the heir and manipulated an aging founder. Her cut at the dinner table was called a minor accident staged for federal intervention.
Photographs from her early career were published beside estimates of Hawthorne wealth.
A former colleague was paid to claim Mara had always wanted status.
Julian filed for divorce and requested half of her temporary trust authority as marital property.
The court rejected the request, but the filing created headlines.
Mara stopped reading them.
Then Julian’s team released audio of her arguing with Samuel during an audit. She could be heard raising her voice and calling him cowardly for delaying action.
The recording was authentic.
Mara released the full conversation.
Samuel had wanted to settle the Ardent claims quietly to protect the company. Mara insisted regulators be informed.
Samuel eventually agreed.
Julian expected the argument to prove manipulation.
It proved Mara challenged Samuel too.
Eleanor watched the full recording alone.
For decades, she interpreted disagreement as betrayal when directed at family authority. Mara and Samuel had trusted each other enough to argue without demanding silence afterward.
That was the relationship Eleanor never built with her children.
Julian’s campaign weakened when Lila spoke publicly.
She confirmed the dinner assault, her hidden recordings and the history of threats.
Reporters asked whether she hated her brother.
“No,” Lila said. “I am afraid of what he chooses when love does not produce obedience.”
The sentence became more damaging than anger.

Julian could dismiss enemies.
He could not easily dismiss a sister who described the family pattern without denying attachment.
