Chapter 11 - Ethan’s First Offer
Ethan requested a settlement before indictment.
He offered to surrender all claims to Reed Dynamics, accept the original prenuptial agreement and return disputed transfers. In exchange, Charlotte would describe the false decree as a law-firm technology error rather than intentional fraud.
The proposal included a confidentiality clause covering their marriage.
Charlotte read it in Arthur Bell’s office.
Ethan was still negotiating for control of the story.
His attorney argued that a public prosecution would damage Reed Dynamics, Margaret’s legacy and confidence in the courts. Quiet correction could protect everyone.
Charlotte asked how quiet correction would help the construction family, nurse and inventor whose evidence had disappeared.
The attorney said those matters were separate.
They were not.
Ethan joined the meeting by video.
He looked tired but composed. He reminded Charlotte of the years when he supported her company, cared for her during illness and defended her against investors.
Those memories were real.
So were the forged pages.
“Did you ever love me?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“Then do not let prosecutors turn our marriage into a conspiracy case.”
“You did that when you used our divorce to enter the court system.”
He said Marcus designed WHITE ORDER and pressured him to participate. Ethan claimed he only wanted leverage to reach a fair property settlement.
Charlotte displayed his three instructions to Reed Dynamics.
Delete the audit.
Suspend the project.
Prepare the sale.
He had not sought fairness.
He had sought ownership of the evidence.
Charlotte rejected the offer.
After the call, she sat alone for several minutes. Refusing did not erase the man who once made her laugh or stayed awake beside her during her father’s surgery.
