Five years after the false decree, Charlotte returned to the courthouse.
There was no hearing.
The Electronic Record Recovery Project was opening a small office across the plaza, and she arrived early before the ceremony.
The marble steps were empty.
She stood where Ethan had raised the document and where Margaret had shouted his name.
Without reporters, the location looked ordinary.
Margaret joined her carrying two coffees.
Their relationship had developed slowly. They met several times a year, spoke about legal reform and avoided pretending the past had created a simple friendship.
Margaret asked whether Charlotte hated the building.
“No. Buildings hold what people do inside and outside them. They do not choose.”
They sat on the steps.
Margaret said Ethan had begun assisting prison educators with basic legal research. He had not requested public credit. She did not know whether the change would last.
Charlotte wished him no harm.
She did not want contact.
Margaret respected both truths.
Across the plaza, young attorneys entered the new office. Some represented tenants, workers and families challenging suspicious digital records.
The false decree had once threatened to take Charlotte’s company.
Its exposure had created tools available to people with no company, famous lawyer or retired judge in their family.
That outcome did not make the betrayal necessary or good.
It made repair larger than punishment.
When the ceremony began, Charlotte and Margaret walked across the plaza separately.
