The Mother Who Ran Down the Steps

Chapter 06 - The Mother Who Ran Down the Steps

Margaret had not run in public since she was a young prosecutor.

Yet when the Integrity Office sent the comparison between her real signature and the forged decree, she left the courthouse chamber without waiting for the elevator.

She descended the interior stairs, crossed the rotunda and pushed through the main doors.

Ethan stood below holding the false order.

For one second, Margaret saw him at ten years old, presenting a school certificate and waiting for praise. Then the cameras turned, and the child disappeared beneath the adult choices surrounding him.

“Why is my signature on an order I never issued?”

Ethan told her to stop speaking.

He approached and lowered his voice.

“Mom, there are cameras.”

“That is why I asked loudly.”

He claimed his attorneys obtained the decree through official channels. He suggested the court clerk made an error and warned that accusing him publicly could damage both their reputations.

Margaret had heard defendants use reputation as leverage for decades.

She had never imagined hearing it from her son.

Charlotte remained several feet away, allowing mother and son no excuse to call the confrontation her performance.

Margaret asked Ethan to surrender the decree.

He refused.

Federal agents approached from the side entrance. Simon Hale’s credentials had been compromised, and investigators now possessed authority to seize devices connected to the forged filing.

Ethan looked toward his attorneys.

One stepped backward.

The other said he had first seen the disputed decree that morning.

Ethan’s phone continued displaying alerts. His access to Reed Dynamics vanished. The family bank reversed its freeze on Charlotte’s accounts and placed his own transfers under review.

Margaret’s anger shifted into something quieter.

“You used my name because you believed I would protect you from what it meant.”

Ethan said she was confused.

Margaret removed a small recorder from her pocket.

The Judicial Integrity Office had authorized her to preserve the confrontation.

Her tests were normal. Her memory was documented. The missing seal had been traced.

Ethan could no longer turn certainty into illness.

Agents collected his phone and the decree.

He was not arrested that afternoon. The investigation still needed to establish who altered the court system and whether Ethan directed the intrusion.

But the courthouse steps had changed the family permanently.

Margaret did not stand beside her son when he left.

She stood beside the evidence.
