Chapter 11 - The Ring on the Table
Claire removed her wedding ring in the hotel office.
She placed it on the table beside Grant’s access badge and the unsigned boarding-school application.
Grant sat across from her with independent counsel present.
“You are overreacting,” he said.
Claire looked at the ring.
“I spent two years underreacting.”
Grant leaned forward.
“I never meant to hurt her.”
“You meant to control her.”
“I was under pressure.”
“So was she.”
“She is a child.”
Claire’s eyes sharpened.
“Exactly.”
Counsel informed Grant that Mercer Capital accounts connected to the attempted transfer would be frozen pending forensic review. The foundation board removed him as gala chair and financial adviser.
Grant looked at Claire.
“What am I supposed to do now?”
Claire stood.
“You will answer the investigators.”
