Henry’s Voice

Chapter 09 - Henry’s Voice
Daniel had brought one more file.
The last recording concerned The Orchard at Dawn.
Henry’s voice filled the ballroom.
“This painting belongs to Lily because every child deserves proof that someone saw them before the world decided who they should become.”
Lily looked at the easel.
Henry continued.
“No spouse, trustee, foundation officer, or creditor may sell it. If anyone attempts to use Lily’s inheritance to cover personal debt, remove that person from every position of authority connected to the Lawson estate.”
The recording ended.
Claire faced him.
“You knew.”
Grant looked toward the guests, searching for sympathy.
“I was protecting the foundation from my temporary cash problem.”
Sebastian Ward answered from the floor.
“You represented that the foundation owned the work.”
Grant ignored him.
He turned to Claire.
“If Mercer Capital fails, every commitment I made to this family fails with it.”
Claire thought of Lily eating soup behind a locked door because the ballroom’s appearance mattered more than her hunger.
“You made commitments to yourself.”
The board counsel stepped onto the platform.
