The Girl Beside the Easel

Chapter 15 - The Girl Beside the Easel

Five years later, Lily stood beside an easel again.

She was ten, wearing paint-stained overalls instead of white lace. Her newest painting waited beneath a cloth.

Claire stood in the audience.

Lily uncovered the canvas.

It showed the Beaumont ballroom exactly as she remembered it: crystal lights, dark suits, the silver table, the croissant on the floor, and a small girl in white.

But the girl was not falling.

She was standing.

Behind her stood a red-haired woman holding the trust ledger. Lily titled it The Person Who Picked Me Up.

Claire cried when she read the name.

After the exhibition, Lily asked whether Grant had ever seen her paintings.

Claire answered honestly.

“I do not know.”

Lily nodded and returned to her friends.

Grant believed The Orchard at Dawn was the most valuable object in the ballroom.

He was wrong.

But the most valuable thing in the room had been a hungry little girl holding a piece of bread.

Grant treated her like an obstacle.

Claire finally saw the danger in explaining cruelty as pressure.

Years later, Lily remembered less about the fall than Claire feared. She remembered her mother’s arms, Rosa’s warm soup, and the fact that the auction stopped when someone finally said no.

That mattered to Claire.

Children did not need every painful memory preserved in perfect detail. They needed the ending to teach them they were worth protecting.

The croissant rolled across the floor for only a few seconds.

Yet those seconds revealed the whole truth.

And once Claire saw it, she never looked away again.
