Julian wrote Vivian from prison.
The first letters defended the company.
The next described Richard’s pressure.
Later, he wrote about the ballroom.
I remember looking down at you and enjoying that the room laughed. I have tried to call that fear, performance, or desperation. It was also enjoyment.
Vivian read that letter.
She did not answer.
Years later, Julian asked whether she believed he had ever loved her.
She responded once through the prison mediator.
“Yes. Love did not stop you from treating my humiliation as useful.”
He sent no reply for six months.
When he wrote again, he did not ask for forgiveness.
Vivian kept some letters private and destroyed others.
The public archive did not own every part of her relationship.
