Chapter 06 - The Missing Mother’s Watch
The broken watch in Margaret Hartwell’s box had stopped at 4:18.
Vivian assumed it marked the plane crash that killed her parents.
Flight records listed the crash at 6:42.
A horologist opened the case and found a micro-storage chip beneath the movement.
The chip contained audio recorded inside Richard Crowe’s office.
Margaret spoke first.
“You changed the employee-trust allocations.”
Richard answered, “Temporarily.”
“My father’s covenant forbids collateralizing pensions.”
“Your father wrote rules for a smaller company.”
“You forged Vivian’s medical file.”
“She is twelve. She cannot manage anything.”
“She doesn’t need to. The guardians do.”
Then Vivian’s father, Daniel Hartwell, entered the conversation.
He accused Richard of arranging a private flight for the family after threatening to remove them from the company.
The recording ended with Richard saying:
If you leave tonight, no one will know where the plane went down.
The official crash investigation blamed weather.
Isaac Grant reopened it.
Maintenance records showed the aircraft’s navigation beacon had been disabled. The pilot received a last-minute route change from Crowe Aviation Services.
Wreckage was recovered from a mountain lake.
No bodies were identified through DNA. Richard arranged a closed memorial and declared Vivian orphaned.
Thomas admitted the guardians failed.
They knew Richard’s declaration contained inconsistencies but could not locate Vivian after foster records changed her surname from Hartwell to Ellis.
Someone inside child services redirected searches.
That person was Elaine Voss, later appointed director of the Crowe Foundation’s youth programs.
She had signed Vivian’s transfer to the estate at fourteen.
Why bring Vivian back after hiding her?
The covenant required proof the beneficiary was alive every seven years. Richard needed access to her biometric signature to renew management.
He collected it through school health exams and company identification cards.
Vivian had never been missing to the Crowes.
She had been stored.
The watch also contained a fragment of Margaret’s final message:
Vivian, if we do not return, remember that being protected and being hidden are not the same.
Vivian listened alone.
She wanted her mother’s voice to feel comforting.
Instead, it opened seventeen years of questions.
Her parents may have died trying to expose the same theft now attached to Julian.
