Julian Crowe’s Defense

Chapter 09 - Julian Crowe’s Defense

Julian’s lawyers presented him as a son trapped inside his father’s crimes.

Richard created the false guardianship, diverted pensions, and hid Margaret.

Julian inherited a company already dependent on fraud.

Revealing it immediately, they argued, would have collapsed factories and harmed workers.

Julian kept operations alive.

The argument contained truth.

Crowe-Hartwell employed thousands. Sudden exposure could have destroyed credit lines.

But Julian used the years of delay to purchase homes, finance Serena’s shell company, and stage Vivian’s surrender.

At deposition, Thomas asked why Julian never contacted the covenant guardians.

“My father said they would dismantle the company.”

“Did you verify that?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I believed him.”

“When did you stop believing him?”

Julian looked through the glass toward Vivian.

“When I discovered Vivian’s full share certificate.”

That occurred three years earlier.

The same month he ended their private relationship and began courting Serena publicly.

Love had survived while Vivian seemed dependent.

Ownership changed his calculation.

Julian asked to speak directly to Vivian.

She agreed once.

“I loved you,” he said.

“I know.”

The answer surprised him.

“You believe me?”

“Yes.”

“Then you understand.”

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“I was trying to preserve everything.”

“You were preserving the version where you remained in charge.”

“What would you have done if I told you?”

“Invoked the covenant.”

“Exactly. Father’s crimes would have destroyed the company.”

“Then you should have helped workers decide whether keeping the company was worth the price.”

“They wouldn’t understand the markets.”

Vivian heard Richard’s voice inside Julian’s certainty.

Stewardship had become a theory that only the steward was capable of consent.

Julian asked whether she felt nothing watching him lose everything.

“I feel grief.”

Hope moved across his face.

“For the man you were?”

May you like

“For the years I spent confusing being privately loved with being publicly respected.”

She ended the meeting.
