Chapter 14 - The Road in the Rain
Investigators reconstructed Thomas’s final drive.
On the night of the crash, Julian followed him from the foundation office in a black sedan registered to a Harrington subsidiary. Thomas called Arthur, then drove toward the estate, likely intending to deliver the evidence hidden in the necklace clasp.
At a narrow bridge, Julian pulled alongside him.
The recovered traffic camera did not show impact clearly, but paint fragments from Thomas’s car matched the sedan’s passenger door. Julian had forced him toward the shoulder. Thomas lost control on the wet road and crashed below the embankment.
Julian stopped.
He walked down to the wreck.
Then he left without calling for help.
A passing truck driver found Thomas forty minutes later. Medical experts now believed he might have survived if emergency services had been called immediately.
When Detective Ellis told Evelyn, grief returned with a violence she had not expected. She went to the cemetery alone and sat beside Thomas’s grave until the rain soaked her coat.
“You were waiting,” she whispered. “And no one came.”
Lily found her there with Daniel, who had tracked Evelyn’s phone after she missed school pickup. The child crawled into her mother’s arms beneath the umbrella.
“Did Daddy know we loved him?”
“Yes,” Evelyn said.
“Did he know you would find the truth?”
Evelyn looked at Thomas’s name carved in stone.
“I think he hoped I would.”
Julian was charged with vehicular homicide and failure to render aid. Celeste was charged with conspiracy after the offshore archive showed she had paid to have the sedan repaired and destroyed.
