The Arrests

Chapter 08 - The Arrests

Detective Mara Ellis arrived with financial-crimes officers and uniformed police. By midnight, the ballroom that had been prepared for charity speeches had become an evidence collection site.

The Aurora Necklace was photographed, sealed, and transferred into police custody. The chip from the clasp contained six years of foundation accounts, private emails, forged approvals, and voice recordings Thomas had made during meetings.

One recording captured Celeste telling him, “Sign the adjustment and your family keeps its future.”

Thomas had refused.

Another captured Julian asking a private investigator for Thomas’s route home.

Julian was arrested for theft, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and obstruction. Celeste was arrested for fraud and conspiracy. Additional charges would depend on the reopened investigation into Thomas’s death.

As officers led Julian through the ballroom, he passed Evelyn.

“You think this makes you important?” he muttered. “Tomorrow, you’ll still be the maid.”

Evelyn met his eyes. “Tomorrow, I’ll still be innocent.”

Celeste maintained her pride until the police placed handcuffs on her. Then she turned to Arthur.

“You cannot let them photograph me like this.”

Arthur looked at the wife he had trusted for twenty-two years. “Evelyn was photographed while you called her a thief. You seemed comfortable with public humiliation then.”

Celeste’s face hardened. “Everything I did was for this family.”

“No. Everything you did was to own it.”

After the police left, the estate became unnaturally quiet. Broken glass glittered near the display room. Abandoned champagne warmed on silver trays.

Arthur approached Evelyn with a written apology and an offer of compensation.

She did not take either.

“My husband tried to warn you,” she said. “Did you ever ask why he suddenly died during your audit?”

Arthur’s eyes filled with shame. “I accepted the report because it was easier than suspecting my own home.”

“That choice cost Thomas his name. People were told he made accounting errors.”

“I will correct every record.”

“You cannot correct three years of Lily believing her father failed.”

Arthur looked toward the child sleeping against Claire’s shoulder.

“No,” he said. “But I can tell the truth.”

Evelyn picked up Lily and walked toward the main doors.

This time, every person in Harrington Hall stepped aside for her.
