Lily’s Question

Chapter 18 - Lily’s Question

One evening, Lily found the old gala video on a classmate’s tablet.

She watched Celeste point at Evelyn. She watched the slap. She watched herself run into her mother’s arms.

At home, she asked the question Evelyn had feared.

“Why didn’t anyone help us?”

Evelyn sat beside her on the bed. “Some people were scared. Some did not understand. Some thought being rich meant being right.”

“But Grandpa Arthur helped.”

“Eventually.”

“Is eventually good?”

Evelyn considered the answer. “Eventually is better than never. But sooner is braver.”

Lily nodded, thinking.

The next week, her class held a presentation about heroes. Other children chose firefighters, athletes, and astronauts.

Lily brought Thomas’s blue-ink notebook.

“My daddy found stolen money,” she told the class. “He wrote down the truth even when important people told him not to. My mommy found the rest of it. A hero is someone who tells the truth before everyone agrees.”

Evelyn listened from the back of the classroom, crying quietly.

Afterward, Lily gave her the drawing Thomas had kept in his office. She had added three figures beneath the old paper stars: Thomas, Evelyn, and herself holding hands.

“We’re all in the picture now,” she said.

Evelyn framed it above her desk at the trust.

The gala video still existed online. It would probably never disappear. But it was no longer the only image attached to their names.

There were new images now: Lily at the clinic opening, Evelyn before the independent board, Thomas’s notebooks in the museum archive.
