The Box Behind the Portrait

Chapter 05 - The Box Behind the Portrait
The brass key did not fit any visible lock in Thomas’s former office. Daniel searched drawers, cabinets, and the old wall safe while Evelyn stood beneath a portrait of Arthur’s first wife, Margaret Harrington.
Margaret had designed the Aurora Necklace thirty years earlier. After her death, Arthur displayed it only at charitable events, calling it a symbol of responsibility rather than wealth.
Lily stared at the portrait. “Her necklace looks different.”
Evelyn followed the child’s gaze. In the painting, the blue diamond hung from a clasp shaped like a tiny eight-pointed star. The clasp recovered from Evelyn’s locker was plain.
Daniel removed the portrait from the wall. Behind it, concealed beneath wallpaper, was a narrow brass keyhole.
Thomas’s key fit.
A shallow compartment opened, revealing a sealed metal box. Inside were three ledger pages, a flash drive, and an envelope addressed to Evelyn.
Her hands trembled as she unfolded the letter.
Evelyn,
If you are reading this, I failed to bring the evidence to Arthur. Money from the children’s medical fund is being transferred through shell companies. The approvals carry my signature, but I did not sign them. Julian knows I found the discrepancies. Celeste ordered me to stop asking questions. I hid the complete records where they would never destroy them without destroying the family’s most treasured object.
Trust the star.
Thomas
Arthur read the letter twice.
Celeste’s face lost its color. “He was unstable. He blamed everyone when the audit exposed his mistakes.”
Evelyn turned toward her. “You told me Thomas was respected.”
“I was trying to comfort a widow.”
“You were trying to silence one.”
Julian lunged for the flash drive. Daniel caught his wrist and forced him back.
Arthur looked from the letter to the recovered clasp. “The clasp from the locker is a replacement.”
Daniel nodded. “Which means the original star clasp may contain whatever Thomas hid.”
“The necklace,” Evelyn whispered.
Julian had not stolen it for money.
He had stolen it to reach the evidence.
Arthur faced his son. “Where is the Aurora Necklace?”
Julian smiled, but panic glistened in his eyes. “Somewhere none of you will ever find it.”
A fire alarm suddenly exploded through the estate.
Red lights flashed.

The gallery sprinklers activated.
And in the confusion, the ballroom went dark.
