The Unsent Recording

Chapter 03 - The Unsent Recording

Daniel had received a message from Claire Monroe, the gala coordinator. She stood near the ballroom entrance, pale and visibly shaken.

“I think you need to see this,” she said.

The video had been recorded accidentally on Claire’s phone several hours earlier. She had been testing a livestream angle in the jewelry gallery, then left the phone propped behind a flower arrangement when she was called away. The recording continued.

Daniel pressed play.

The small screen showed the empty gallery before the gala. At 4:17 p.m., Julian entered through the main doorway. He checked the corridor, unlocked the display case with a copied key, and lifted the Aurora Necklace from its stand.

No one spoke.

On the video, Julian placed the necklace inside his jacket. Then he noticed the phone. He moved toward it, but a staff member called his name from outside. He left without seeing that the camera was still recording.

Arthur’s face became stone.

Celeste reached for the phone. “This could be edited.”

Claire stepped back. “It’s the original file. The timestamp matches the building system.”

Julian’s confident mask slipped. “I moved it for security. There had been threats against the gala.”

“Then why did you tell no one?” Arthur asked.

“I was going to.”

“Why was part of it planted in Evelyn’s locker?”

Julian opened his mouth, but nothing came.

Arthur struck him across the face.

The slap turned Julian’s head. Gasps rippled through the corridor. He touched his cheek, stunned that his father had humiliated him before the same people who had watched Evelyn be humiliated moments earlier.

Arthur’s voice shook. “You allowed an innocent woman to be hit and branded a thief.”

Celeste grabbed Arthur’s arm. “Stop this. He is our son.”

“And she is a human being.”

Lily peered around Evelyn’s uniform. Julian saw the child’s tear-streaked face, but instead of shame, anger flashed in his eyes.

Daniel enlarged the final frames of the recording. A strip of white paper protruded from Julian’s inner pocket. On it was a handwritten name: Thomas Grant.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Thomas was her late husband.

He had died three years earlier in a car crash after working as an accountant for the Harrington Foundation.

“Why did you have my husband’s name in your pocket?” she asked.

Julian looked away.

Arthur heard the fear beneath her words. “Daniel, lock the gates. No one leaves the estate.”

For the first time that evening, Julian looked truly afraid.
