The Morning After

Chapter 09 - The Morning After

By sunrise, the footage from the gala had spread across every major news channel. One clip showed Celeste slapping Evelyn. Another showed Arthur slapping Julian after seeing the recording.

The public knew the images before it knew the truth.

Reporters gathered outside Evelyn’s apartment. Some called her a victim. Others questioned whether she had helped stage the theft. Anonymous accounts posted photographs of Lily’s school and Thomas’s grave.

Evelyn pulled the curtains and turned off her phone.

Lily sat at the kitchen table with a bowl of cereal she did not eat.

“Are bad people coming here?”

“No.”

“Then why are there cameras?”

“Because people want a story.”

“Are we the story?”

Evelyn sat beside her. “We are people. That matters more.”

A knock came at the door. It was Detective Ellis, accompanied by Daniel.

Mara explained that the police had reopened Thomas’s death as a possible homicide. Tire marks in the original photographs showed a second vehicle, but the evidence had been dismissed as unrelated. Julian’s old phone records now placed him on the same road.

Daniel carried a small cardboard box from Thomas’s archived office. Inside were notebooks, family photographs, and a child’s drawing Lily had made when she was four.

Across the top, Thomas had written: For the bravest girl I know.

Lily pressed the drawing to her chest.

Daniel looked at Evelyn. “Arthur asked me to give you something else.”

It was a formal letter clearing Thomas of every accusation connected to the foundation audit. Arthur had signed it in his capacity as chairman and sent copies to the board, police, and media.

Evelyn read it once, then folded it.

“It’s late,” she said.

“Yes,” Daniel replied. “But it’s public.”

Mara warned them that Julian’s lawyers would try to shift blame. “They may claim Thomas created the fraudulent accounts and blackmailed the family.”

Evelyn looked at the notebooks.

“Then we prove he didn’t.”

For the first time since the gala, she felt something stronger than fear.

She felt purpose.
