The state conservation laboratory issued its preliminary findings five days later.
The replica displayed at the gala had been fabricated within the previous three months. Its resin matched a product ordered by the Crowell Museum under Marcus Vale’s employee account. Microscopic metal shavings linked its lead came to a powered cutter in the Briarwood conservation room.
The original Scarlet Wing carried traces of new adhesive from the same room, proving it had been removed from an older frame there.
More damaging was the paper trail.
Victoria had transferred $180,000 from a restricted education fund to Hartwell Private Logistics through three consulting companies. The supposed European seller of the fragment did not exist. The acquisition had been staged to create a legitimate-looking history before the piece was privately sold.
Detective Ortiz presented the evidence to the district attorney.
Marcus accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony. He admitted making the replica and transporting the original, but insisted Victoria designed the scheme and controlled the money.
Victoria appeared outside the courthouse wearing a dark suit and a calm expression. Her attorney described Marcus as a disgruntled employee who exploited a grieving institution. He called Eleanor’s authorship claim “a separate historical dispute being used to prejudice the public.”
The strategy was obvious: separate the crimes from the stolen legacy, then attack the person with the least documentation.
Samuel answered with the sketchbook.
Rachel digitized Eleanor’s original cartoons.
The chapel archives produced invoices for pigments ordered in Eleanor Pierce’s handwriting. A retired furnace operator remembered her working alone after midnight. Two former assistants described Henry’s habit of presenting other people’s designs as his own.
Then a local television station found a 1981 recording in its basement.
The footage showed Henry being interviewed beside the unfinished Mercy Window. Behind him, reflected in a sheet of clear glass, Eleanor could be seen soldering the Scarlet Wing.
The image lasted four seconds.
It was enough.
Public opinion shifted overnight. People who had praised Henry for decades began asking how many other names had been erased. The museum’s social pages filled with photographs of anonymous studio workers.
Victoria stopped speaking to reporters.
But her attorney filed an emergency motion to prevent Eleanor from repairing the hairline crack in the original fragment, arguing that any intervention could destroy evidence.
Eleanor understood the legal caution.
