The Window Without a Church

Chapter 16 - The Window Without a Church
The Mercy Window had not survived intact.
The fire at St. Matthew’s Chapel in 1998 destroyed most of the building and shattered nearly every section of glass. The Scarlet Wing was rescued by a firefighter, then passed through private hands before disappearing.
With the fragment recovered, the board faced a question: where did it belong?
Some wanted it returned to the rebuilt chapel. Others argued it should remain in the museum as evidence in the Crowell investigation. A private donor offered millions to purchase it and place it in a new gallery named for Eleanor.
She rejected the offer.
“The wing was made for people who were grieving,” she said. “It should not become a trophy for people who can afford a private room.”
Eleanor proposed a new work.
Using surviving photographs, original cartoons and fragments recovered from the chapel ruins, a team would rebuild the Mercy Window—not as a replica, but as a continuation. Missing sections would be filled with clear glass etched with the names of every documented craftsperson from Crowell Studio.
The Scarlet Wing would remain original and visible at the center.
Dr. Chen worried about placing the fragile fragment under structural load. Thomas Reed’s grandson, now an engineer, designed a floating support that carried the weight around it. June Holloway’s daughter mixed a new blue inspired by her mother’s notes. Students from Rachel’s school cut practice shapes under supervision.
Eleanor led the workshop.
At first, she found it difficult to give instructions. She had spent a lifetime making herself smaller in professional rooms. But the younger artists waited for her decisions, not because she demanded authority, but because she had earned it.
Noah filmed the rebuilding for a documentary titled The Hands Behind the Light.
One evening, he asked Eleanor whether she wished the original window had never been stolen.
She considered the question.
“I wish the harm had never happened,” she said. “But I do not want to return to the woman I was before it. She survived by becoming invisible. I would rather build from where I am now.”

Behind her, the Scarlet Wing glowed beneath a work lamp.
Around it, dozens of new pieces waited to become a window.
