The Crack That Kept Growing

Chapter 12 - The Crack That Kept Growing

The Scarlet Wing was moved to the state laboratory under controlled temperature and humidity, but the fracture continued to lengthen.

It advanced less than a millimeter each day.

To anyone else, that seemed insignificant. To Eleanor, it was a countdown.

The crack followed an old stress line created when the wing was first cooled in 1981. If it reached the inner curve, the panel could separate into two pieces. The lab conservators proposed stabilizing it with a transparent synthetic adhesive.

Eleanor objected.

“The glass is mouth-blown,” she explained. “It moves differently under heat. The adhesive will hold the surface but push the stress into the lead channel. You will save the crack and lose the wing.”

The chief conservator, Dr. Maya Chen, listened rather than dismissing her. She asked Eleanor to demonstrate using a scrap panel. Eleanor showed how the original lead seam had been stretched by hurried removal and how carefully releasing two solder points would allow the glass to settle.

The method was delicate. One wrong movement could break the fragment.

Victoria’s attorney used the risk to argue that Eleanor should not be allowed near it. He portrayed her as emotionally invested and professionally unlicensed.

Dr. Chen responded in court with a sentence that reached every evening broadcast.

“Licenses certify training. They do not erase fifty years of mastery.”

The judge permitted Eleanor to assist under laboratory supervision once all forensic imaging was complete.

Before the repair, Rachel and Eleanor stood outside the clean room. Rachel asked whether she was afraid.

“Terrified,” Eleanor said.

“Then why do it?”

“Because fear is not always a warning to stop. Sometimes it is the price of touching what matters.”

Inside, Eleanor heated the old solder with a narrow iron. Her hands remained steady until the first joint released. The lead relaxed with a faint metallic sigh.

Dr. Chen supported the glass while Eleanor reset the channel around the tip. For six hours, they worked beneath magnification.

At 4:12 in the morning, the crack stopped moving.

The Scarlet Wing remained whole.

Eleanor looked at the copper swallow glowing under the examination light. For the first time, she did not see the object as evidence of what had been taken.

She saw proof of what had survived.
